Police & Prison Museum
The museum is set in what used to be the House of Correction and the Liberty Gaol which dates back to the 17th Century. The building
occupied by the museum was built in 1816 as Ripon Liberty Prison until it closed in 1878. 9 years later, in 1887, it became Ripon Police
Station.
The rooms in the museum consist of unfortunate individuals incarcerated by several means, an audio visual presentation, a policing from
Anglo Saxon times to the formation of the Professional Police in 1829 theme, a Police uniforms and headgear theme, and you will get the
chance to see a prisoner in a Victorian cell, with only a hard wooden bed and a slops bucket for company!
